Stat Tagging Quick Reference
In Australia and New Zealand, games follow FIBA rules. This is a quick reference for tagging stats in Glory League.
For full rules and edge cases, see the detailed stat guides.
Field Goals
A field goal is any shot attempt during live play — not including free throws.
- Made → tag 2PT or 3PT
- Missed → tag 2PM or 3PM
Tag a shot when:
- The player shoots and the ball is live
- The shot is released before the buzzer sounds
- The shot is blocked
Do not tag a shot when:
- The player is fouled before the ball is released
- A teammate commits a foul or violation before the ball is released
Free Throws
- Made → tag 1PT
- Missed → tag 1PM
Common cases:
| Situation | What to tag |
|---|---|
| Defender violates + shot missed | Ignore the attempt — record the replacement shot only |
| Shooter violates + shot missed | Record the miss (1PM) |
| Teammate violates on the last free throw + shot missed | Record the miss (1PM) + team rebound to defence |
No turnovers are recorded on free throw violations.
Rebounds
A rebound is awarded when a team gains control of the ball after a missed shot.
Tag a rebound when:
- A player clearly gets control of the ball
- A player tips the ball in a controlled way to a teammate
Do not tag a rebound when:
- It's not the last free throw in a series
- The period ends before anyone gains control
- The shot clock expires before anyone gains control
If no individual player controls the ball — tag a team rebound.
Assists
An assist goes to the player who makes the last pass that directly leads to a score. The key question is: was the scorer already in a good position when they received the pass, or did they have to create the opportunity themselves after catching it?
Always an assist:
- Pass into the paint → score from inside the paint
- Catch and shoot with no dribble
Tag an assist when:
- The scorer takes a dribble or two to get balanced or set their feet, but was already open when they caught the ball
- The scorer drives past a defender who was already off-balance or out of position at the time of the catch
Do not tag an assist when:
- The scorer has to beat their defender after catching the ball — they created their own shot
- The play resets after the catch — the scorer dribbles around, re-reads the defence, or sets up again before shooting
- An offensive rebound happens between the pass and the score
- The pass is deflected and reaches a different player than intended
No dribble limit applies. What matters is whether the scorer was already in a good position at the moment of the catch — not how many dribbles they took.
Only the last pass before the shot can earn an assist, even if an earlier pass created the play.
If the scorer is fouled on the shot and makes at least one free throw, the assist still counts.
Turnovers
A turnover is when the offensive team loses possession before a shot.
Player turnover:
- Bad pass
- Ball lost while dribbling or fumbled
- Violations — travel, double dribble, 3-second, out of bounds
- Offensive foul
Team turnover:
- Shot clock violation
- 5-second or 8-second violation
Always tag the player who caused the turnover, not the player who was affected by it.
Steals
A steal is awarded to a defender who causes a turnover and touches the ball.
Tag a steal when:
- A pass is intercepted or deflected and the ball stays live
- The ball is taken directly from a dribbler
- The defender forces a held ball and their team wins possession
Do not tag a steal when:
- The ball goes out of bounds after the defensive play
- The turnover is caused by an offensive foul
- The defender did not make contact with the ball
Every steal must have a corresponding turnover on the other side. A turnover does not always mean a steal — but a steal always means a turnover.
Blocks
A block is awarded to a defender who makes contact with a shot attempt and causes it to miss.
Tag a block when:
- The defender makes contact with the ball during a shot → and the shot misses
Do not tag a block when:
- The shot goes in despite the contact
- The ball had already hit the rim before contact
- The ball is taken below shoulder height — tag a steal instead
- The shooter is fouled on the attempt — no shot attempt is recorded, so no block can be recorded
